Qld: Help number for storms victims
The Queensland government has set up a special telephone number for residents of the
Gold Coast and Boonah affected by violent storms on Saturday night.
More than 23,000 houses were left without power as storms swept through the area causing
damage estimated at more than $6 million.
The storms lifted roofs and brought down trees which crashed onto houses, prompting
Premier PETER BEATTIE yesterday to activate state disaster relief arrangements.
Families Minister JUDY SPENCE says people can contact the disaster relief information
line on 1800 440 074 to see whether they are eligible for financial assistance to repair
storm damage.
The line will be open from 9am to 9pm (AEST) until Friday, December 28.
Ms SPENCE says disaster relief money will assist low-income earners who have lost essential
household contents or who have suffered damage to their residences and are without insurance.
