NSW Law Council president Bret (Bret) Walker, SC, said his members were unashamedlyhappy to see one of their colleagues rise to the High Court bench.

Law Council of Australia president Ron Heinrich praised Justice Gaudron for her contributionwhich had been widely respected.

"Undoubtedly, with the increasing numbers of women at the bar, there will be many morewomen reaching the High Court," he said.

"The Law Council looks forward to that."

But outside the court, a trio of protesters claimed the lack of even one woman on theseven-member bench was becoming a problem.

ACT lawyer Jennie Clarke said there was a vast pool of qualified women in the profession.

Her three-year-old daughter held up a placard saying "Mum, can women become High Court judges?"

"My daughter's at an age when she wants to know if women can become police, or a HighCourt judge. She wants to know if a woman can be these things," she said.

Ms Clarke said it was bad for girls' self-esteem to see a male-dominated High Court bench.
