FED:Go past the scaremongering, says Swan
CANBERRA, April 20 AAP - Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has admitted the government will
find it much easier to sell its carbon tax once it unveils more detail of the design and
associated compensation.
Mr Swan says the debate is currently being bogged down by "hysterical scaremongering"
by big business but he believes there is still a community will to tackle climate change.
"When we get all of the detail out there for people to see it will be far easier to
engage in that discussion in a way which is free of so much of the hysterical scaremongering
that is coming from vested interests in our community who don't really care about meeting
this long-term challenge," the treasurer told the Queensland Media Club on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard wrote to the Business Council of Australia (BCA) this
week to ask if it still believed a market mechanism was the best way to reduce the country's
greenhouse gas emissions.
The move came after the council queried the government's pledge to devote more than
half of the carbon tax revenue to assist households.
Mr Swan said on Wednesday he was "slightly surprised" the BCA didn't seem to be as
big a supporter of pricing carbon now as in the past.
"It's a tough battle," he said of the struggle to introduce an emissions trading scheme.
"But one we've got to do because it's a key reform that goes to the core of not only
our productivity but the extent to which we can be competitive in the 21st century."

Taobao.com Vendor Finances CNY100mn
SHANGHAI, Jan 28, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Online kids' clothing retailer Green Box Network Technology Co., Ltd. lately completed the second round of financing reaching CNY 100 million, the largest among Taobao.com vendors. More than three months ago, the company just finished the first round of financing hitting CNY 20 million.
Green Box is just burgeoning. The company started selling kids' clothing on Taobao.com from December 2008. The next month, its sales value hit CNY 120,000. On November 11, 2010, the figure reached CNY 10.5 million on the single day.
Currently, Taobao.com generates 80% of Green Box's online sales value and the rest comes from m18.com and VANCL. Next, Green Box will debut its existing brands on brick-and-mortar stores.
Reporters find out that Green Box operates kids' clothing according to brands with different styles, which is rare in China but popular abroad. For example, Eland from South Korea forayed into the kids' clothing market in 1999. By far, it has been operating sixteen brands, three of which have been sold in China with different style orientations.

FED:Kingmaker needs a rest
CAIRNS, Aug 23 AAP - Kingmaking is an exhausting business - just ask Bob Katter.
The independent member for the north Queensland seat of Kennedy MP is taking Monday
morning off to rest ahead of crucial meetings to decide the next government.
Mr Katter is one of a handful of independents and minor party representatives who will
hold the balance of power after Saturday's election delivered a likely hung parliament.
His spokeswoman said he was resting after having survived on very little sleep over
the past few days, bombarded by the media attention that's come with his new position
of power.
Mr Katter is yet to decide when to fly to Canberra to meet with fellow independents
Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor, both from NSW, but that could happen as early as Monday
afternoon, the spokeswoman said.

Qld: Beattie praises predecessor on anniversary
By Paul Osborne
BRISBANE, Dec 1 AAP - Former Queensland premier Wayne Goss set a new tone for honesty
in politics, says his successor Peter Beattie.
Wednesday marks the 20th anniversary of the election of the Goss Labor government,
which came after 32 years of conservative party rule in the Sunshine State, mostly under
Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen.
The Labor win came in the wake of the Fitzgerald inquiry which exposed decades of corruption
in government and the police service.
The ALP will celebrate on Wednesday night with a lavish dinner at Brisbane's convention centre.
Mr Beattie, now the state's trade commissioner to the Americas, told AAP Mr Goss restored
Labor's credibility after decades of factional rivalry and disorganisation.
"He demonstrated what an honest, decent leader could do," Mr Beattie said.
"I think the fact he went and implemented the Fitzgerald reforms, he set a new tone
of honesty in Queensland politics.
"He started the modern Labor party."
Mr Beattie, who was effectively exiled to the backbench during most of the Goss era,
said Mr Goss deserved a celebration.
"Wayne Goss is a Labor icon and I didn't always agree with him but he is someone I
have enormous respect for," Mr Beattie said.

woman, 19, remain in a Brisbane hospital.
Four men and a woman, from Germany, Britain and Norway have been released from hospital.

NSW: Brothers jailed over fatal Bondi stabbing
SYDNEY, April 4 AAP - One of two brothers who pleaded guilty to a savage 2006 knife
attack in Bondi has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison.
Justice Peter Johnson today sentenced Dror Salah, 33, an Israeli national, to eight
years and nine months in jail.
He had pleaded guilty to manslaughter part-way through a murder trial last month, when
his younger brother Ezra Salah, 32, also pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the
fact.
Ezra was sentenced to three years prison with a non-parole period of one year and eleven months.
The pair were charged over the killing of 38-year-old Hernan Guelman, who died in hospital
after he was repeatedly stabbed outside a Bondi convenience store in August 2006.
Justice Johnson said the attack was the culmination of a long-running feud between
the brothers and Mr Guelman.
On the day of the attack, the bothers had taken vacuum cleaner pipes with the intention
of bashing Mr Guelman, who responded by grabbing a kitchen knife.
"Once Dror took the knife ... he savagely attacked the deceased," Justice Johnson told
the NSW Supreme Court today.

Fed: Germaine Greer named FHM woman of the year
Eds: Embargoed until 0001 (AEDT) Monday December 3
SYDNEY, Dec 3 AAP - Germaine Greer may look back on 2007 as the year she became an
unlikely pin-up with Australia's men's magazines.
The 68-year-old feminist has beaten former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins to be named
FHM magazine's woman of the year in their 2007 Bloke Awards.
Greer, who was also chosen ahead of Summer Heights High character Ja'mie King, played
by comedian Chris Lilley, took out the award for being unafraid to speak the truth.
"Steve Irwin's death was ironic comedy? It was! Princess Di was little more than a
media whore? She was! She's like a brilliantly grumpy pop culture truth rod," the magazine
said of Greer.
Earlier in the year she became the poster girl for Zoo magazine's search for Australia's
sexiest feminist, which featured a naked photo of Greer.
"Germaine's not adverse to taking her clothes off, I mean she was very hot in the 60s
when she stripped down to her bra and knickers to pose," editor Paul Merrill said in September.
"We've got a picture of Germaine completely naked and I think she looks great."
Jennifer Hawkins shouldn't feel too disappointed in losing out to Greer in the Bloke
Awards, as her Loveables underwear ads took the gong for best advertisement.
The awards also honoured comedian Hamish Blake, who nabbed the man of the year award
ahead of fellow comedian Dave Hughes and disgraced footballer Ben Cousins.
According to the awards, blokes preferred to talk about women rather than sport in
2007, and Britney Spears' disastrous comeback was named the biggest disappointment of
the year.
Gold Coast band Operator Please might have won an ARIA for Just A Song About Ping Pong,
but the magazine called it the worst song of 2007.
The awards, which are decided by the "experts" at FHM, also declared chicken the meat
of the year, beating perennial favourites bacon and beef.

Qld: Qld parliament endorses new Liberal senator
BRISBANE, April 19 AAP - Queensland parliament has endorsed a Brisbane businesswoman
as the state's newest senator.
Sue Boyce was today unanimously endorsed by the state parliament to replace former
Liberal senator Santo Santoro.
The seat was made vacant after Mr Santoro, the former minister for ageing, was forced
to resign after failing to reveal the extent of his share trading activities.
Senator Boyce is the chair of plumbing products company Everhard Industries and a disability
campaigner.
She is Queensland's first female Liberal senator since Kathy Sullivan left the upper
house in 1984.
Senator Boyce today sat in the public gallery of parliament with her family during the debate.
Premier Peter Beattie, who moved the motion, pledged to work with the new senator,
who will take her seat in Canberra for the first time on May 8.
"On behalf of all members I wish you well for a long and distinguished parliamentary
career and indicate a willingness of my government to work with you to ensure that the
interests of Queensland are advanced," Mr Beattie said.
Mr Beattie was also critical of the man Senator Boyce replaced.
"Today is the culmination of another sad chapter in the history of the Queensland Liberal
Party," he said.
"When Santo Santoro announced he was going to resign on the 20th of March - following
his disgraceful share debacle - he set in place nearly a month of infighting in the Liberals."
The premier questioned why Mr Santoro waited more than 20 days before he tendered his
resignation.
Liberal leader Bruce Flegg seconded Mr Beattie's motion.
He said Senator Boyce was a successful businesswoman, a devoted disability campaigner
and a woman committed to her family.
"She is actually the sort of person that political parties of all persuasions should
be encouraging to run for public office," he said.
Deputy Premier Anna Bligh congratulated Senator Boyce on her nomination, saying Australian
politics needed more women.
Opposition Leader Jeff Seeney also welcomed Senator Boyce to politics, but warned she
would have to grapple with conflicting responsibilities to the state and to her own political
party.

SYDNEY, April 5 AAP - Refugees detained in Sydney's Villawood detention centre have
been exposed to asbestos.
Police say the centre is "riddled with asbestos" and they want it closed, The Daily

The paper said the Department of Immigration last night had advised detainees they
may have been exposed to deadly particles.
Dangerous asbestos levels had been detected at the site where 257 detainees were being
held while awaiting decisions on their visa status.
"Our information is that the place is riddled with it," the newspaper quoted Police

Breakfast Round-Up: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AAP RTV FILE AT 0430
Judges (SYDNEY)
A tax crackdown may result in the sacking of 16 judges who face criminal charges for
ignoring requests to lodge late returns.
The judges, based in courts across the nation, were yesterday warned by the Australian
Tax Office they would be charged for failing to comply with a request to file outstanding
tax returns for the 2003-04 financial year.
The offence could prompt parliaments to dismiss the judges.
A spokesman for New South Wales Attorney-General BOB DEBUS has told The Australian
newspaper that any of the state's judges charged with criminal offences should step aside.
Last week the tax office served 31 judicial officers, predominantly from NSW and Victoria,
to file late tax returns by Monday or risk facing prosecution.
Terror Aust (CANBERRA)
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says Australians authorities are keeping a watchful eye
on up to 60 suspected terrorists in their midst.
But the government has rejected calls for it to tighten its efforts against terrorism
by targeting suspicious people of Middle Eastern descent.
Australian Federal Police chief MICK KEELTY has backed claims by former spy MICHAEL
ROACH that up to 60 extremists, some of whom trained by terror groups overseas, are living
in Australia.
Mr ROACH, a former officer with the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation,
has urged the government to take a hard line to counter the threat.
He wants authorities to adopt extreme counter-terrorism measures, such as police and
security guards approaching men of Middle Eastern appearance who acted suspiciously.
Telstra (CANBERRA)
Communications Minister HELEN COONAN and Deputy Prime Minister MARK VAILE are heading
to regional New South Wales today to announce plans forcing Telstra to maintain a presence
in the bush once the government sells its stake in the telco.
The ministers will visit Kendall, on the state's mid north coast, where they will reveal
plans to help future-proof telecommunications services in rural and regional Australia.
They're also outlining ways to provide faster internet services for the nearby townships
of Lorne and Crescent Head.
Their visit follows a whirlwind two-day trip to regional New South Wales and Queensland
by new Telstra chief SOL TRUJILLO.
Mr TRUJILLO said he would not spend money on services in areas where it could not make a profit.
Indon Corby (DENPASAR)
SCHAPELLE CORBY has been dealt a blow by three Balinese judges who've shut down her
re-opened drugs trial, refusing to allow her lawyers more time to find new witnesses.
The 28-year-old Gold Coast woman has been sentenced to 20 years jail for smuggling
4.1 kilograms of marijuana into Bali last October.
At her re-trail -- which opened today -- one of the judges also ruled out the possibility
of evidence being given by videolink by Australian witnesses associated with drug trafficking.
He said witnesses must testify in Bali in person, which means they could be prosecuted
under Indonesian law.
It's likely CORBY'S defence team will now lodge a new appeal and ask for a time extension
from the Bali High Court.
Iemma (SYDNEY)
Newly installed New South Wales premier MORRIS IEMMA has announced his cabinet.
Mr IEMMA has anointed outspoken minister MICHAEL COSTA as the minister responsible
for reining in government spending.
He also gains infrastructure and keeps responsibility for the Hunter.
Mr COSTA has reported as saying it would make no difference if 20 per cent of the state's
public servants are sacked.
But he said today there would be no forced redundancies in the public service.
Korp (MELBOURNE)
Documents tendered to a Melbourne court show accused murderer JOE KORP threw a swingers
party at his mistress' house four days before she strangled his wife.
47-year-old Korp is committed to stand trial in the Victorian Supreme Court on eight
charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to murder and intentionally causing serious
injury.

Economy (CANBERRA)
The Reserve Bank has kept home buyers happy by leaving interest rates unchanged.
The official cash rate remains at 5.5 per cent.
It's the fifth consecutive month that the bank has left rates on hold.
With inflation within the bank's target range, and with high oil prices keeping a lid
on spending, analysts are not surprised by the decision.
And Treasurer PETER COSTELLO says with inflation under control, there's no reason for
any interest rate rise.
Palm (TOWNSVILLE)
Family and friends of a Palm Island man who died in police custody have sat through
disturbing footage of his final moments at an inquest.
The inquest into the death on November the 19th last year of 36-year-old MULRUNJI has
resumed in the Townsville Supreme Court yesterday after two days of hearings this week
on Palm Island.
Autopsy results released a week after MULRUNJI'S death, which showed he suffered broken
ribs and a ruptured spleen, sparked riots at the north Queensland indigenous community.
A DVD, which ran for an hour, showed MULRUNJI lying flat on his back in a cell yelling
out occasionally and slightly moving his legs.
As time passed a police officer walked into the room and nudged MULRUNJI with his foot
but he failed to move.
Cycling Gillett (CANBERRA)
Two Australian cyclists critically injured in a freak road accident in Germany have
been moved out of an intensive care unit.
ALEXIS RHODES, who's 20, and 23-year-old LOUISE YAXLEY were seriously injured when
an out-of-control teenage driver hit the Australian cyclists.
The accident happened during a training session on July the 18th, and resulted in the
death of the pair's teammate AMY GILLETT.
They are now recovering in hospital with two other teammates.
Australian Institute of Sport director PETER FRICKER says it will be some weeks before
RHODES and YAXLEY are ready to be flown home to Australia.
UK Sceats (LONDON)
An Australian student accused of triggering an airport bomb scare in England with a
text message has been cleared of any crime, but left with a hefty legal bill.
ANGELA SCEATS, who's 19, was found not guilty of false communication after a two-day trial.
But a judge has ruled that she should pay her own legal costs, estimated at nearly $A35,000.
SCEATS spent 10 days in prison after being remanded in custody by magistrates following
her arrest in November.
She says the incident was an unfortunate misunderstanding.
UK Tube (LONDON)
British police say they have charged a suspect arrested in connection with the attempted
July the 21st London bombings.
Scotland Yard says 23-year-old ISMAEL ABDURAHMAN has been charged and will face court tomorrow.
It is the first formal charges to come from a string of arrests following the attack.
US Shuttle (HOUSTON)
US astronaut STEPHEN ROBINSON has carried out repairs to the shuttle Discovery by pulling
out two ceramic fibres that experts feared could have caused the shuttle to overheat when
it returns to Earth.
But experts have still not decided what to do about a thermal blanket below the cockpit
that is also causing concern.
ROBINSON easily pulled out the two problematic protruding pieces of ceramic fibre under
the nose of Discovery within minutes of each other.
Discovery -- carrying Australian ANDY THOMAS among its crew -- is the first shuttle
mission since the Columbia burned up in 2003, killing all seven astronauts on board.
Meanwhile, no decision has been taken over what to do about the thermal blanket below
Discovery's cockpit.
AND IN SPORT:
CRICKET AUST (BIRMINGHAM)
England captain MICHAEL VAUGHAN has been passed fit for the second Ashes Test at Edgbaston
after overcoming an elbow injury.
VAUGHAN proved his fitness with a 25-minute session in the nets and will bat at No.3
in the batting order.
England has decided to release PAUL COLLINGWOOD from the team presenting under-pressure
spinner ASHLEY GILES with another opportunity to answer his critics.
AFL TEAMS (Melbourne)
Geelong could be without another key player for tomorrow night's AFL match against
St Kilda, with key defender CAMERON MOONEY in doubt with an injured back.
The Cats lost captain STEVEN KING earlier this week because of a broken finger and
are battling a long injury list.
St Kilda boasts the most prolific attack in the league and Geelong can ill-afford to
be without MOONEY for the match.

FED: Alston tipped for plum London posting: report
MELBOURNE, Dec 1 AAP - Former Howard government minister Richard Alston is the hot
favourite to become Australia's next high commissioner to London.
The 62-year-old retired from politics this year after 18 years as a Victorian senator
and nearly eight years as communications minister.
If appointed, he would become the 17th Liberal politician or Howard government adviser
to receive a diplomatic posting since 1996, The Age newspaper reported.
Mr Alston is expected to take over the position in the first half of next year after
the current high commissioner, Michael L'Estrange, returns from London, the newspaper
reports.
Mr L'Estrange, who headed the cabinet policy unit from 1996 to 2000 and is a close
confidant of Prime Minister John Howard, is expected to take over as head of the Department
of Foreign Affairs and Trade early next year.
A government adviser told the newspaper that Mr Alston's appointment was yet to be
confirmed, but that he was the government's preferred choice.
Another government adviser reportedly said that Mr Alston was "virtually guaranteed,
provided of course that Richard and Megs (Mr Alston's wife) really want the job."

Can CEOs defend corporate America's image? Chief Executive's annual survey shows top execs' crucial role, but reveals too few are worrying about Internet rumors. (Corporate Reputation).(Illustration)
Alan Greenspan told Congress in March that "conceptual assets" play a more important role in our economy than ever before. The Federal Reserve chairman was referring to things like intellectual capital, brand name and business reputation. On one hand, he said, that's good because such concepts are not--subject to cyclical swings. But the events of this past year painfully proved that such intangible assets carry different risks. Enron's collapse is a prime example of the vulnerability of a company whose value is based on its good name. "Trust and reputation," Greenspan noted, "can vanish overnight."
The public has long been suspicious of big business, but the recent financial meltdowns have created even more disdain and distrust. "The whole issue of corporate reputation, particularly over the last year, has become a critical issue," says Harlan Teller, president of Hill and Knowlton's worldwide corporate practice and its global chief client officer. "It's a very substantial yet tenuous asset. Any controversy or misstep can have a profound effect, particularly with companies that are in the public eye."
In Chief Executive's fourth corporate reputation survey, created in partnership with Hill and Knowlton and conducted earlier this year by Harris Interactive, corporate crisis and its ensuing fallout were obviously on executives' minds. Surprisingly, however, concerns about criticism and rumors over the Internet have declined sharply from a year ago.
In terms of overall reputation, 42 percent of the 557 top executives surveyed considered unethical corporate behavior to be one of the most important threats, second only to criticism in the print or broadcast media (49 percent). Another 38 percent said monitoring reputation is crucial enough to be a board-level function.
Some companies are models when it comes to reputation, including Intel, which made the survey's top 10. Intel's CEO, Craig Barrett, points out that reputation is something to be built over years, not just pumped up during a cloudy economy or corporate crisis. "It is not something that you can turn off and on," he says. "It is something that is fundamental to a successful company and can only be created and maintained by 'doing the right things right.' A company that changes its values or belief structure depending on the prevailing winds will be, and be perceived as, a shallow entity."
A number of companies are choosing to do the right thing. Among the consequences of corporate scandal was an increase in good will and intentions. In light of the September 11 attacks, CEOs reported an increase in both corporate social responsibility and employee communication. The "outstanding" response overall of businesses to the September 11 tragedy also furthered existing trends in how companies are building and maintaining their reputations, says Teller. Corporate social responsibility, for one, has moved from a "nice-to-do" to a "must-do" (66 percent of the survey's respondents said it adds a moderate or significant amount to reputation). Companies are also increasingly trying to humanize the corporation by showing the heart that beats behind the staid facade, often using the CEO or other employees as ambassadors. "Some companies," Teller says, "think nothing of spending hundreds of millions of dollars to build a personality for a bar of soap. [yet they spend] nothing on corporate personality. The com panies that will do well are those successful at humanizing themselves."
"Intel Values" is just such an example. The company has established a set of core values that drive its actions, both internally and externally. Its "great place to work" value, for instance, says Intel should be an asset to the communities in which it operates. Under that principle, employees volunteer time (more than 230,000 hours last year) and Intel contributes money (about $120 million in global education support in 2001). "I know this sounds simple, but we firmly believe we build and maintain our reputation by continually reinforcing our commitment to our corporate values," Barrett says.
Just look at the others in the survey's top 10, including General Electric, WalMart and Southwest Airlines. Most are strong consumer franchises with powerful connections to the people who buy their products. They have high public profiles and either have or had a well-regarded CEO, most notably the retired chief of GE, Jack Welch. The average person tends to know who and what these companies represent. Even parent companies whose names are different than the brands they sell, like Johnson & Johnson, have a very "emotional element that resonates," says Teller.
While the bottom 10 on the survey's reputation scale also tended to have high profiles, fewer of them were consumer companies. Neither Tyco nor Lucent, for instance, make many consumer products. Yet both have also had highly publicized financial problems. Teller says those two companies landed low because top-level executives answered the survey; that group tends to equate financial woes and poor reputation more readily than consumers would.
Still, reputation isn't just about positive or negative feelings toward a company. If Greenspan is broaching the issue, you can be sure there's a financial effect. The survey respondents agreed. Forty percent said the No. 1 benefit of having a good reputation is the leverage it gives to drive sales.
A bad corporate reputation can harm more than that individual company; it can damage a whole industry. Try to sell an Internet business, even a viable one, to a venture capital firm today. As Greenspan noted in his testimony to Congress, bigger problems to the overall economy can occur "if problems at one particular firm tend to make investors uncertain about other [similarly situated] firms.
Despite such perils, the most dramatic change from last year was the precipitous drop in concern about the Internet's effect on corporate reputation. In 2000, 57 percent of respondents said they had a strategy for managing communications on the Internet, an 11-percent increase from the year before. This year, however, the figure plunged to just 10 percent. That drop, along with another finding that 43 percent don't monitor the Internet at all, alarms Teller.
"The Internet has made things much more transparent between corporations and people. Look at reporters' usage of the Web; it's gone through the roof," he says. "Management has gotten used to the Internet being around, but it's a real mistake to take your eye off the ball just because it's more integrated."
Although Internet rumors and gossip may not be talked about as much or seem as harmful as when the medium was new, they're still around. Outback Steakhouse was still fending off a false email last fall that claimed the recipient would get a $25 gift certificate from the chain restaurant for sending a trackable email to 15 friends, according to a March study by Planet-Feedback and Intelliseek. They also found that Ford Motor and Bridgestone/Firestone could have detected tire blowout complaints as early as 1994 through postings on the Web.
Part of the problem with how the Internet affects corporate reputation is measuring the phenomenon. How do companies quantify what's being said about them online? There are some firms that peddle formulas to assess reputation, but all have very different factors and calculations. The survey's respondents were at a loss with this issue. Of those that try to measure it, 73 percent said they still rely on word of mouth to assess their reputation. That may change over time if a uniform standard for measurement emerges. The fact that corporate reputation is important has gotten into the water supply," says Teller. "The question now is, what do you do about it?"

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN MELLOW? CORY MYERS IS, EVEN THOUGH HIS TECH JOB DRIED UP IN JANUARY.(Business)
Byline: Janet Forgrieve News Staff Writer
Cory Myers exudes mellow.
Until January, the Boulder resident was director of Web development for RxMarketplace.com, a Louisville-based B2B online pharmacy that laid off all but two of its 33 workers in January.
At a pink-slip party in late February, Myers chatted calmly, appearing comfortable in the role of job seeker.
``If I get worried, it's fleeting,'' he said, sipping a free Guinness. ``I know something will work out. There are a lot of tech jobs in this area, it's just the matter of finding the right one. I'm enjoying myself right now, because when the money runs out, that's when I'll really worry.''
More than a month later, Myers has sent out 60 resumes, gone to 10 or 12 job interviews and come in second for one position.
But as of last week, he was still looking - and still sounding calm about it.
``I'm still getting people finding my resume on Monster.com, I'm still meeting people in Boulder who are giving me some decent leads,'' he says. ``It's good to be involved in tech, because a lot of my friends are, too.''
Lately, he has been spending about 20 hours a week actively hunting, and another 20 or so starting a consulting business with two friends. The partners have already signed two clients.
``I'm doing it initially to keep an option open, but I do hope, over the course of time, it will be a full-time position,'' he said. ``We're positioning ourselves for the future.''
Meanwhile, the hunt continues, much of it using the medium Myers has specialized in throughout his career. He has been contacted about eight times by companies that saw his resume on the Internet, and all but three of his interviews came from online classifieds or job sites. At 36, he's a lot pickier about the types of positions he'll seek than he was in his 20s. That's where the job search Web sites come in handy.
``By having the targeted search criteria, it saves time,'' he said. ``There are a lot of jobs I probably would have applied for in the earlier years of my career that I won't now.''
Before moving to Boulder almost two years ago, Myers spent more than six years as a director of electronic publishing at a company in Chicago. He has checked out a couple job leads back in the Windy City but has decided he likes the Boulder lifestyle too much to go back.
He said financially he's still OK, thanks, in part, to a large income-tax refund. Myers has done some belt-tightening, and said he's been finding some creative ways to entertain himself.
``I was given a gift of membership at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art,'' he said. ``Now's the time to be going. And, when the weather gets better, there'll be a lot more bike riding involved.''
