Gregory Mankiw, the chairman of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers, did not identify the jocks and the popular people at the White House, but he says everybody knows who the nerds are.

Mankiw, a Harvard professor who has written two popular college textbooks on economics, says all the Ph.D. economists who work at the CEA give his operation a definite egghead cast.

"The CEA is the nerdiest part of the Executive Office of the President _ ask anyone at the White House and they will confirm this," Mankiw told a questioner during a White House-sponsored Internet chat on Friday.
