A disturbing disparity

One of the most difficult issues for leaders in the Latino and African American communities is to criticize the criminal justice system. To do so can create the appearance that the leaders are somehow sanctioning criminal activity. Therefore, unfavorable commentary on the police and the courts must be diplomatically stated.

The objective of all such criticism is to assure that the criminal justice system functions fairly and objectively without weighing heavily against blacks and Latinos. Last week the American Civil Liberties Union issued a report which suggested that the juvenile justice system in Massachusetts is not color blind.
