Fed: Villawood detainees exposed to asbestos, police say
SYDNEY, April 5 AAP - Refugees detained in Sydney's Villawood detention centre have
been exposed to asbestos.
Police say the centre is "riddled with asbestos" and they want it closed, The Daily
Telegraph reported today.
The paper said the Department of Immigration last night had advised detainees they
may have been exposed to deadly particles.
Dangerous asbestos levels had been detected at the site where 257 detainees were being
held while awaiting decisions on their visa status.
"Our information is that the place is riddled with it," the newspaper quoted Police
Association secretary Peter Remfrey as saying.
"The federal government must shut this site immediately and relocate the detainees
to other sites around the country."
